  1. What is Clean in Place system Clean and place(CIP) systems have been using by F&B Firms for many years. It is most commonly used by food and beverage industries, pharmaceuticals, and other processing plants. It is used clean the interior surfaces of process equipment, tanks, and other sanitary fittings without requiring the individual to disassemble the equipment. Implementing a clean in place system saves time of the operator in cleaning the equipment.

  2. Need of CIP System According to the United States FDA,  the machines used in pharmaceutical, Dairy, Food and beverage industries should be cleaned, maintained, and sanitized from time to time  to prevent malfunction and contamination. As machinery these days are complicated to disassemble so this is where CIP system comes in hand. CIP systems clean high tech machines and process systems internally without disassembling them.

  3. Working of a CIP The cleaning process takes place when we put the required amount of detergent in the interiors of equipment. After this we apply sufficient heat and pressure of water to remove dirt or other dust particles from the interiors.  The detergent used for cleaning is usually the Mixture of  Caustic soda, nitric acid and phosphoric, Sodium Hypochlorite (Hypo), and Peracetic Acid (PAA). Nowadays Clean-in-Place systems are also using as Sanitizing in place(SIP) systems.

  4. Advantages • Enhance Safety:  All chemicals and cleaning agents are contained in the vessels which reduces the exposure of harmful chemicals to workers. • Increase in Productivity: As cleaning is automatic so there will be a less human effort in cleaning. We can use that time and manpower in increasing productivity. • Minimize Errors: As we know whole cleaning process is automatic which in turn reduces the chance of human errors. As a result chances of manufacturing an unsafe product will be reduced.

  5. Disadvantages • Clean in Place Systems are expensive. • It is good If you know how to operate a CIP system, Otherwise you have to hire an expert to operate CIP. • CIP process  cannot be stopped after it’s started. We will have to compromise with hygiene if we want to stop it in between.
