Main Ideas • Stupa- a sacred site that houses the remains of a holy person. • Reincarnation- the wheel is a symbol of the unending cycle of birth and rebirth. • Calligraphy- a form of writing that decorates the wall of the mosques. • Ramayana & Mahabharata- Epic poems • In the late 1800’s, Afghanistan was a buffer state between Russia and British India.

  3. Main Ideas continued • In a plebiscite, people vote on important issues. (constitutional issues, changes, etc.) • Conflict in Kashmir has led to increased tension between India and Pakistan. • Relations between India and Bangladesh have sometimes been strained because refugees from Bangladesh have flooded into India. • India’s foreign policy made them a leader among nonaligned nations.

Main Ideas continued • Pakistan has close ties with the Middle East because (a) Pakistan borders the Middle East, (b) Pakistan exports oil to the Middle East, and ( c ) Pakistan and the Islamic nations share similar cultures with the Middle East. • The Narmada Valley Project has sparked debate because it will flood fertile farmland. • A decline in infant mortality (death ) caused a rapid population growth. • Most of the newcomers to cities of India are landless peasants from villages.

Main Ideas continued • Islam forbade the use of images of people and animals in Muslim art so they used calligraphy. • The Ramayana and Mahabharata have inspired the arts in India because they helped to teach Hindu values. • Literature in South Asia reflects the cultural diversity because it is written in many languages. • Music, dance, and drama are closely linked in the performing arts in India.
