The Nova Scotia Partners for Workplace Education • A provincial advisory committee established in 1997 to increase the role of business and labour as partners with government in the workplace education initiative. • The goal of the committee is to encourage the growth of a learning culture within the Nova Scotia workplace.

Nova Scotia Partners • Advises workplace partners on policy issues • Ambassadors for Workplace Education • Creates public awareness around skill development issues • Members sit on Workplace Program Approval Committee • Managed federal/provincial project in creation of new workplace curriculum (Document Use Refresher)

Why Partnerships Work • Management contributes industry expertise • Labour/Workers/Participants contribute job expertise and knowledge of the workforce • Government constitutes knowledge of adult education and good practice • Instructor partners with workplace/project team to customize programs

  9. Today’s workplace is constantly changing. Workplace Education programs help workers deal with change. • It is a chance to improve your reading, writing, math, problem solving, oral communication and basic computer skills

  10. Investment Total: $1,358,672.12 Province: $422,557.60 Industry: $936,114.52 • 2006-2007 • 142 programs were • established at 70 work sites. • 1222 employees benefited from Workplace Education.

  11. Benefits of Workplace Education • Workers develop skills and self-confidence that they can use at work, at home and in the community • Nova Scotia strengthens its economy and overall society through a lifelong learning culture

Program Streams • Workplace Education- provides on-site programs for employed workers customized to the workplace • Allendale Electronics: Workplace Numeracy and Communications • C-Vision Ltd Electronics • Pete’s Frootique: Leadership Skills • Workforce Adjustment- assists displaced workers who require transition support to search for and obtain new employment • Trenton Works Transition Centre • Maple Leaf Transition Centre • Hershey Canada (Moirs) • Canadian Auto Workers/Clearwater • OLS:Valley, Northern, Central • One Journey-Work and Learn- provides job-specific training to clients in receipt of income assistance who upon successful completion move into employment with an industry partner • Trucking Project: Trucking Sector Council • CCA Training, Antigonish, Truro, Metro

Programs Continued • Apprenticeship Essential Skills - assists apprentices in the technical portion of their training • Sheet Metal Workers and Roofers, Local 56 – Essential Skills for Roofers • Women Unlimited Project • Small Business Essential Skills - ensures that the essential skills needs of small and rural businesses are met • Fisherman’s Cove Small Business Program • Sector Engagement Program - promotes human resource planning and development in partnership with key stakeholder organizations. Seeks to promote the development of a learning culture through capacity building at the sectoral level • Healthcare Sector Council Recruitment and Retention Strategy
