  1. We buy diamonds because it looks rich and royal with all its shine and brilliance. But, what is it that gives it the shine it has? It is the cut of the diamond. The cut here refers to the diamond’s facet alignment, proportions, and finish. Don’t mistake the shape to be same as the cut, as these two terms are entirely different in the case of diamonds. Different styles of diamond cuts have been developed to enhance the stone’s properties. And, when you understand what the cut is about, you will be in a position to make a wise decision when planning to buy the best diamond jewellery in Bangalore. A diamond’s cut represents three basic properties – brilliance, fire and sparkle. Let us understand what each of these means. Brilliance – When light hits a diamond, it may either be absorbed or reflected, causing internal and external reflection, which is what is known as brilliance. Fire – When light travels through the diamond, some rays are broken down into a rainbow of colours, which reflect off the stone’s interior surfaces into colourful flashes. This is what is known as fire.

  2. Sparkle – Move a diamond back and forth, and you will see a pattern of dark and light areas, and flashes of coloured light being emitted from the stone. This effect is known as the sparkle. The different styles of diamond cuts Brilliant cut style – In this style, facets are cut in a way that maximizes the brilliance of a diamond. (Example – Round cut) Step cut style – In this style, the facets run parallel to each other, and to the edge of the diamond. (Examples – Emerald cut, Baguette cut) Mixed cut style – This is a combination of the brilliant and step cut styles, with the optical effect of the brilliant style and dimension of the step cut style. (Example – Princess cut) Fancy cut style – This style includes any cut that is not a round classic cut. (Examples – Heart cut, Oval cut, Pear cut) Diamond cuts and shapes Round cut – This is the most popular cut seen, with a USP of incredible brilliance. Emerald cut – This cut is a rectangular shape with trimmed corners in step cut style. When the rectangular shape is replaced with a square shape, the cut is known as Asscher cut. Princess cut – This is another popular cut that displays the sparkle of the brilliant cut in a rectangular shape. Heart, oval cut, pear cut – These cuts are just like the silhouettes of the shapes they are named after. Cushion cut – This cut is a square or rectangular shape with rounded corners, giving the diamond a pillow or cushion like appearance; thus the name. Choose your preferred cut style and shape when you want a perfectly designed jewellery piece that suits your choice. However, make sure to select your diamonds with care. Inspect the diamond under various light sources. Last but not the least, go for a certified diamond.
