  2. ①The Moroccan Invasion • The Moroccan government wanted to take over Songhai’s lucrative salt and gold mines. • Why?The Moroccan government had fought invaders in previous wars, so it was ruined and needed money. As a result, in 1591, the Moroccan armyinvaded Songhai. •

  3. • The Moroccan army was well-equippedwith: ★ Various weapons including a few cannons and a deadly new form of a gun, the arquebus. While Songhai’s army only had: ★ Swords, spears, and bows. • The Moroccan army was: ★ Well-trained and disciplined. ★ Composed of 1/2 Moroccans, and 1/2 Spanish and Portuguese war prisoners who wanted to avoid time in prison.

  4. ② The Destruction of Songhai • The Moroccan weapons were superior to Songhai’s weapons. • The Moroccan army attacked and took over two important trade cities, Timbuktu and Gao.

  5. • Songhai fell due to: ❉ The loss of Timbuktu and Gaoand the loss of income they produced. ❉ Changes in trade patterns: 1. Overland trade declined Why? Because port cities became more important. 2. Trade routes changed.

  6. Conclusion Songhai’s empire was over. The era of the the great African empires had come to an end.
