Happy to be Incontinence free

2 weeks ago, today I had a urethral sling surgery to improve the stress incontinence issue that has plagued my running. For me, this was the result of muscle weakness following the birth of my two children. I tried many non-surgical options prior to making the decision to have the surgery, including Pilates, Physical Therapy, and a lot of Kegels.

1. Happy to be Incontinence free 2 weeks ago, today I had a urethral sling surgery to improve the stress incontinence issue that has plagued my running. For me, this was the result of muscle weakness following the birth of my two children. I tried many non-surgical options prior to making the decision to have the surgery, including Pilates, Physical Therapy, and a lot of Kegels. If this is a problem that you have as well, click here for more information about the problem and the surgery that I had. Things have gotten SO much better since yesterday! Happy Me

 2. We’re still staying with my family in Sacramento (both for the holidays and for help from my parents during this interminable 6 weeks while I can’t lift anything heavy…like my 2-year-old daughter!). Due to all the pain and problems, I’ve been having, my doctor wanted to see me in Walnut Creek yesterday so my hubs and I drove down to see her on the morning of NYE. 13 days post-op, a brutal urinary tract infection, 2 ER visits and 3 antibiotics later, I was feeling discouraged by my situation and humbled to have still been wearing a catheter bag. It was still agony each time I tried to pee – like the worst UTI I’ve ever had. Ironically, I had gone from not being able to run without peeing to not being able to pee at all. (Careful what you wish for?) Unable to carry my two years old daughter without support I went into my doctor's appointment in fear that I’d possibly broken a future, that I’d have to have the surgery reversed (the mesh tape “cut”) to fix my retention problem and/or have to have the surgery done again. She assuaged each of my fears. She first confirmed that no sutures were broken. She then explained that if the tape had to be cut (because it was too tight causing my “retention” problems), we wouldn’t be able to know that for sure until 4-6 weeks after the surgery. At that time, if she had to cut the tape, my body would have already built up enough scar tissue to

 3. support the structure put in place by the tape. Basically, even if she cuts the tape, I’ll still be able to run without peeing! OMG – HOORAY!! OMG, HOORAY! I started “bladder training” yesterday. With the help of a “self-Cath” device, I’m hoping to soon be device-free. (Even I’m getting uncomfortable at the level of TMI here…if you’d like to hear more about this process, PM me.) I’ve gained 5 pounds since my surgery. I was able to go for a walk for the first time today – I walked 3 miles along the American River bike trail. I’m antsy and anxious about how much my body has already changed but I’m hoping to get it all back.

 4. Walk freely for hours I’m so excited for my incontinence pads-free new life. I’m optimistic that this surgery will have changed my life for the better. I’m thrilled that I may get the chance to run a full marathon for the first and really train to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I can’t wait to get started! In the meantime, I’m allowing myself to heal and enjoy a lovely time with my family. Source
