  1. Where can we Find the Biggest Port in India The Basics of Ports & Terminals, Biggest Port In India and the Way Ahead. The Indian subcontinent is one of the largest peninsulas in the world. It is covered by the ocean on the East, South, and West sides. The total coastline of the country spans 7516.6 kilometers, which contributes a whopping 95% of the total trade by volume and 68% by value. Ocean trading on the coastline is possible because of a total number of 200 ports. 12 of these are government-led & 1 is a private major ports. The other 187 are minor or intermediate ports. Let us dig deeper into more details about ports and terminals, and find out which amongst these 200 is the biggest port in India. Ports are facilities near the ocean that connect land and water for the transport of goods and passengers via ocean transportation. They play an important role in the economic development of a country. There are several port functions that enable this growth. Some of these are 1.Berthing and anchoring services 2.Cargo movement services 3.Road and rail connectivity for multimodal transportation 4.Point of customs & immigration clearances 5.Storage and warehousing facilities Ports are the hubs for all maritime trade-related activities and a gateway for passengers entering via the sea. They facilitate the safe loading and unloading of cargo onto ships and harbor ships when they are not in use. Types of sea ports

  2. Located on the seashore, the classification of ports is based on what they transport via the sea. The ports that facilitate the transport of goods are called cargo ports and those for passengers are called cruise ports. Cruise ports are also known as ‘home ports’ so a ‘Cruise home port’ is the port where onboarding and deboarding of passengers and cruise supplies are executed at the beginning and end of the cruise journey. Cargo ports on the other hand are further classified as Bulk cargo ports for loose goods like liquids, grains, etc. Containerized cargo ports for unitized cargo transported in pallets, drums, etc. These cargo ports have different types of terminals to handle specific types of cargo. For instance, bulk cargo ports have separate terminals for dry cargo (coal, grains, bauxite, sand, iron ore) and liquid cargo (LNG, petroleum, Oils, chemicals). Containerized cargo ports have Break-bulk (pallets, drums, boxes, pallets), neo- bulk (paper, steel, vehicles), and containerized terminals (containers). These terminals may be handled by different shipping companies or terminal operators. Now that we are aware of the ports and terminal services, let us see the classification of ports in India and which is the biggest port in India. All the ports across the country are to be managed by both the central and state governments. The classification of this management is such that the major ports are to be managed by the central government while minor and intermediate ports are to be managed by the state governments. Amongst the 12 central government-led major ports, the Mumbai port is the biggest port in India by area. It spans over 400 square kilometers area set at the midway mark of the western coastal region. The sea here is 10-12 meters deep

  3. which facilitates easy harboring for large ships. It is operated by the Mumbai Port Trust and wholly owned by the Government of India. The large area has 63 birthing facilities and 5 wharves that allow for 62.82 tonnes of cargo annually by approximately 7000 employees. Amongst the private port companies in India, Adani Ports & Special Economic Zones (APSEZ), have 13 domestic ports in 7 states. Their Mundra Economic Hub in Gujarat is the busiest port in India and boasts of the use of the latest technology for its port functions. Such huge ports have functions to be managed across several areas. Ports across the globe are adopting to technological changes and converting into smart ports. These ports include automation and the latest technology like Artificial intelligence, Internet-of-things, Blockchain, and Big data to improve their performance and efficiency in managing these large trade facilities. Seaports that have already started using tech-based solutions for port & terminal management. Here is a list of automated ports in the world so far. 1.Port of Rotterdam 2.Port of Singapore 3.Port of Shanghai 4.Port of Barcelona 5.Port of Hamburg 6.Port of Antwerp 7.Port Le Havre HAROPA 8.Port of Valencia 9.Copenhagen Malmo Port (CMP) 10. Port of Los Angeles Cargoes Ports & Terminals is one such saas-based solution to handle port functions smoothly and efficiently for increased productivity and profitability in

  4. the international shipping industry. The Sagarmala program under the government of India is expected to promote the digitization of ports and we can expect the biggest port in India and all the other major ports to rank in the list of automated ports soon.
