Introduction Definition (Ecosystem) – An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants ,animals and other organisms as well as weather ,work together . Ecosystem contain biotic or living ,parts as well as biotic factors or non – living parts . Ecosystem can be very large or small .
Biomass -Biomass in an ecosystem is the mass or weight of living tissue, which is commonly subdivided into five fundamental trophic levels forming the basic food chain: 1. producers, which are green photosynthesizing plants 2. herbivores, which eat producers 3. predators, which eat herbivores 4 . top predators, which eat predators 5. decomposers, which break down dead tissue of all five group
Pyramid Of Number It is a graphical representation of the number of individual per unit area of various tropical level stepwise with producer being kept at the base and the top carnivores kept at the tip. There are three types of ecological pyramids 1. Number 2. biomass 3. energy

3.Biotic or Ecological Succession Natural development of a series of biotic communities at the same site, one after the other The representation is show in next page so that First community – Pioneer community Last community – climax community The distance between the first and last community is transition community \seral community
Sere also know as First community ,transition community and last community Hydrosere A hydrosere is a plant succession which occur in a area of fresh water body such as pond, lakes and marshes. Xerarch Succession Xerarch Succession: Plant succession starting on bare ground or rock and culminating in a mature climax forest.
Important and Main causes Ecological succession is important for the growth and development of an ecosystem It initiates colonization of new areas and recolonization of the areas that had been destroyed due to certain biotic and climatic factors. Thus, the organisms can adapt to the changes and learn to survive in a changing environment. Main Causes The main causes of ecological succession include the biotic and climatic factors that can destroy the populations of an area. Wind fire soil erosion natural disasters include the climatic factors
Questions 1.What is meant by ecological succession ? 2. What are seral communities? 3. Differentiate between Pioneer communities and Climax communities 4. What is the ecological succession of bare rocktechnically called? 5. How is the ecological succession in a waterbody technically called?
Answers Ecological Succession is the process of change in the species structure of an ecological community over a period of time. The distance between the first and last community is transition community \seral community First community – Pioneer community .Last community – climax community Xerarch Succession: Plant succession starting on bare ground or rock and culminating in a mature climax forest A hydrosere is a plant succession which occur in a area of fresh water body such as pond, lakes and marshes.
