  2. Keep Moving To Prevent Osteoarthritis People who suffer from osteoarthritis have a joint disease that causes them to lose cartilage. This will create friction between their bones. It results in people experiencing pain and swelling in their joints. Approximately half of the population in the United States experience some level of osteoarthritis. It is a condition that is experienced by two-thirds of adults who are obese. It becomes more common as people get older.

  3. Exercise And Diet Research has proven that regular exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight can help deal with the effects of osteoarthritis. Doing this improves a person's circulation to their joints. It will improve joint lubrication and increase a person's mobility. Scientists have also determined that certain foods have a negative effect on a person's joints. This includes gluten, sugar as well as dairy products. These have been proven to increase the inflammation in some people and cause them more joint pain.

  4. Cardiovascular Exercise There are some exercises that help people who have osteoarthritis. They include bicycling, walking, swimming and more. Some doctors say it could be any exercise a person can tolerate that gets their heart rate up. Many people enjoy taking a brisk walk for pain relief. If this is too difficult, a person may want to try using a recumbent bike. These bicycles extend the angle of a person's joint. This means their hips and knees won't flex too much during each rotation.

  5. Muscle Strengthening Some people assume weights would be bad for a person with osteoarthritis, but there is research that shows just the opposite. When a person can strengthen the muscle around their joints, the increase in strength will take pressure off of their joints and significantly decrease the pain. Studies have shown people who regularly participate in strength and resistance exercise experience a decrease in their pain. They also have a significant increase in their mobility.

  6. Range Of Motion And Flexibility There are some exercises that people with osteoarthritis can do to increase their range of motion and flexibility. Some of these could be stretching exercises done in a pool or on a mat. The important thing is the exercise is done in an unforced manner. This will help a person's joints become lubricated and promote healing of any damage. It's important people start doing these exercises under the supervision of a trained professional. They will be able to determine the ability and comfort level of a person with osteoarthritis.

  7. Fall Prevention When people with osteoarthritis exercise regularly, and incorporate strength training, their chances of accidentally falling reduce dramatically. A recent study of women in their 70s and 80s showed a decrease of as much as 57 percent in their fall risk scores after doing basic balance and strength training.
