  1. ORAL CANCER A W A R E N E S S MONTH Oral Cancer is the third most common type of cancer prevailing in India. It is defined as an uncontrollable growth of cells in the oral cavity. The initial symptoms include small growths and pain in the oral cavity that doesn’t fade away. Oral Cancer can affect lips, tongue, cheeks, sinuses, pharynx etc. APR CAUSES Severe Alcoholism Chewing Tobacco Products Smoking Cigarettes Chewing Betel Nut Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Excessive Sun Exposure To The Lips SYMPTOMS A white or red patch on the tongue, gums or mouth linings A sore throat that doesn’t heal Difficulty in swallowing or chewing Persistent mouth pain Constant jaw pain Bad breath STATISTICS AND FACTS Out of 7, 00,000 new cancer cases diagnosed every year in India, about 3, 00,000 cases belong to tobacco-related cancers. In India, almost one million people die of oral cancer every year. In September 2014, The Union Health Ministry made it obligatory for cigarette manufacturing companies to have a statutory warning against smoking on the cigarette packs. The graphic depiction of throat and oral cancer is also compulsory. The most common type of oral cancer is known as Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which starts from the lining of the oral cavity. If discovered at the initial stages, oral cancer is curable and the success rate is high. Oral cancer can be an inherited disease.
