The Added Value of eHealth • eHealth is not a set of products, tools or application but a range of response to the need to improve and transform healthcare services • Cost saving is important but does only represents one side of the added value of eHealth • The role and value of eHealth is in supporting and enabling the transformation of healthcare services • Is then eHealth indispensable or simply useful? 1st eHealth conference - Sofia

Useful and Indispensable! • eHealth has an added value when investments are required for sharing information and by doing so achieving: • Equity of access • Quality of care • Cost containment • eHealth has an added value in areas where transformation of healthcare services is indispensable • Care for chronic conditions • Integration of care across primary, secondary and social care • Adaptation to demographic changes • Patient safety and knowledge support • … 1st eHealth conference - Sofia

The Diabetes Paradox … • In a recent report, Dr Line Kleinebreil, Vice Chairman PCD Europe, concluded • Diabetes, an IMPOSSIBLE challenge for primary care: • < 40% diabetic patients have the recommended annual check-up • Primary care professionals are key resources for chronic patients in « old Europe » but are BURNT OUT and asking for help • URGENT NEED for appropriate use of e-health (e-education, call centres, home care) to improve chronic care today and face the epidemic tomorrow • Rome conference of EHTEL (October 2005) 1st eHealth conference - Sofia

Articulating the EU and MS level • The broad areas of requirements at European level can be summarised as: • patient and professional mobility • citizen centred health systems • improved quality and efficiency of healthcare availability • The challenge is to provide a European environment where the balance between the responsibilities of the Member States and the European Union can be made. 1st eHealth conference - Sofia
