Family Safety Program Overview Vision: Develop and continuously improve a model system of family safety that: • has the confidence of the citizens of Florida; • is effective and efficient in its use of resources; • provides accountability in achieving its mission, goals and objectives; • is seen as a national model. Mission: The Family Safety program provides leadership in working with community partners to insure the safety, timely permanency and well-being of Florida’s children and families. 1

  2. Family Safety DataFY 00-01 • Through May 01, there were 163, 285 investigations initiated and 136,718 investigations closed. • The closed cases included: • 235,616 alleged child victims • 109,130 children with findings of maltreatment. • As of May 1, there were 17,890 children in foster care.

Child Welfare Annual Outcome Reports • Guiding Principles: • Performance that is primarily within control of State child welfare system • Measures should be assessed in ways that limit the potential for misinterpretation • Should assess the continuous improvement of each State over time, rather than compare States with each other • Should be based on data that are available through existing data collection systems

  7. Federal Outcomes 1: Reduce recurrence of child abuse and/or neglect. 2: Reduce the incidence of child abuse and/or neglect in foster care. 3: Increase permanency for children in foster care

  8. Federal Outcomes, cont. • 4: Reduce time in foster care to reunification without increasing re-entry • 5: Reduce time in care to adoption. • 6: Increase placement stability. • 7. Reduce placements of young children in group homes or institutions.
