Prambanan Temple Compounds Beside the three major structures are hundreds of shrines show- ing high levels of stone building technology and architecture of the time in Java. Prambanan Temple Compounds represent not only an architectural and cultural treasure, but also a standing proof of past religious peaceful cohabitation. Prambanan Temple Compounds were built next to Borobudur between 8th and 10th century, during the heyday of Sailendra’s powerful Hindu dynasty in Java. It is the largest temple com- pound dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia, and consists of up to 500 temples, and dominated by the three giant structures at the centre. Each of these structures is based on concentric squares and decorated with reliefs illustrating the epic of the Ramaya- na, dedicated to the three great Hindu divinities (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma) and three temples dedicated to the animals who serve them. These reliefs are masterpieces of stone carvings. A spectacular Prambanan’s view is during the evening sunset, when the silhouette of the Temple is contrusted with the back- drop of firing volcano Gunung Merapi (Mount Fire). The day was concluded with an open air dinner and a jaw-dropping traditional Javanese folk theatre performance. 1
