  2. WHO IS MAYA ANGELOU? • Maya Angelou was An American poet, autobiographer, storyteller, and activist. • Angelou had a broad career as a singer, dancer, actress, composer, and Hollywood’s first female black director, but became most famous as a writer, editor, essayist, playwright, and poet.

WHO IS MAYA ANGELOU? • As a civil rights activist, Maya fought tirelessly against racism and social injustice. • In 2010, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the U.S., by President Barack Obama. • Her poetry has often been lauded more for its depictions of Black beauty, the strength of women, and the human spirit; demanding social justice for all.

ABOUT THE POEM ‘’Caged Bird’’ • "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou was written in the late 60's during the time when African Americans were fighting for civil rights and freedom. • This time in history is called the Civil Rights Movement in which many African Americans were standing up to Whites who believed they were superior to blacks.

ABOUT THE POEM ‘’Caged Bird’’ • The poem is a Metaphor illustrating the differences between African-Americans and Whites during the civil rights era. • The author, a black woman who grew up in the South during this era, is expressing her feelings at the discrimination she faced during her life.
