  1. There are several types of light bulbs used in different lighting accessories. Some of them are exclusively used for specific outdoor lighting applications, while others can be generic and can be used in a wider range of applications. 7 Types of Street Lighting Bulbs

  2. Incandescent street light bulbs use tungsten-halogen filament which are commonly used in theaters and stadiums. • Cheap to manufacture • High efficiency • High brightness and color rendition • Adaptable to large voltage and current ranges • Can work with DC and AC power • Short lifespan • High maintenance cost • These are mostly used in floodlights, headlights, stadium lights, sports field lights.

  3. In Fluorescent Light Bulbs, metal electrode is encased on both ends of such light bulbs. Inside the tube, it contains mercury and argon gases which are responsible for igniting the lamp. • More efficient than incandescent lamps • Emit lesser heat than incandescent lamps • Takes longer to reach full intensity brightness • Hazardous as it contains mercury • Sensitivity to cold temperatures • Lifespan of 7,500 - 20,000 hours • These are used in parking lot lighting and perimeter street lighting.

  4. High Pressure Sodium (HPS) use a mixture of different gases and produce light. • Produces yellow-orange illumination • Low maintenance • Produces reddish color at the end of its life • Burns at the end of its life • Needs a transformer for current regulation and voltage change

  5. Unlike HPS, Low Pressure Sodium (LPS) Street Light Bulb emit warm or yellow light. • Longer lifespan than HPS • Lesser glare than the HPS • Colors cannot be easily distinguished • Has purely yellow-orange color • Such lights are particularly used in low-mount applications like lighting inside tunnels or under the bridge, etc.

  6. Induction Lamps use an electromagnetic field to excite mercury particles mixed in an inert gas like argon or krypton for creation of light. • Long lifespan • Energy efficient • Comparatively larger in size • Cannot be used in low mounting applications • High color rendering index • Not suitable for areas with high temperature • Mostly used for the purpose of commercial lighting.

  7. Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) Street Light Bulb mimic the physical feature of the incandescent bulb, but internally, they operate like fluorescent bulbs possess tubular loops. • Longer lifespan • Controlled beam spread • Compact & high efficiency • Intensity can lessen after half of its life • Require a ballast • Lesser power consumption

  8. Light Emitting Diode (LED) Street Lights the most energy efficient option for outdoor lighting solutions, are preferred over CFLs as solar street lights and integrated solar street lights. • Produce blue/white light • Extremely long lifespan of around 50,000 hours • Suitable for automatic brightness and dimming • Require less maintenance • Cost effective • Energy efficient with less heat emission

  9. In general, LED lights are the best option for general-purpose street lighting. They are the most energy efficient, with the longest lifespan and with no harmful carbon emissions. They are basically the best type of light for solar street lights as well.
