  1. •Friction •Friction •Factors affecting Friction •Types of Friction •Friction : A Necessary evil •How to increase and decrease friction Friction :- Friction is the force resisting relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers and material elements sliding against each other. Examples : 1. After applying brakes to moving bicycle the surface of brakes offers friction to surface of moving wheel and bicycle stops because of friction. 2. Push a book on table ,it stops after moving for some distance because of friction between surface of book and table. Causes : Friction exists between two surfaces due to irregularities on the surfaces of object in contact, interlocking of microlevel irregularities of the two surfaces. Factors affecting friction:- Roughness of surface, Nature of surface, extent to which two surfaces press together Types of friction :- Static ,Sliding , Rolling

  2. 1. Static friction : Static friction is the force of friction on an object that is not moving. If we push a stationary block it does not move, it is being held by static friction which is equal and opposite to our push. 2. Sliding friction : Sliding friction is a contact force that resists the sliding motion of two objects or an object and a surface. 3. Rolling friction :- Rolling friction is the force resisting the motion when a body rolls on a surface. Advantage of friction : 1. Friction between pen and paper enables us to write on the paper. 2. It helps us to walk on the ground. 3. Breaks of vehicles work due to friction. Disadvantages of friction :- 1. It causes wear and tear of machines. 2. As it opposes motion ,hence more energy is needed to overcome friction.

  3. Friction is necessary evil : Depending on the circumstances friction can be a help or a hindrance. Thus it is a necessary evil. Increase and decrease friction : To increase friction, the surfaces in contact have to be made rough, the two surfaces in contact can be pressed harder. To decrease friction grease can be used, ball bearings can be used .
