  1. Who is an IAS officer? What is it? These two main questions float in our minds when we hear the word IAS. IAS stands for Indian Administrative Service, and, in layman’s terms, An IAS officer is a term used for the collectors who roam in a “LalBatti” car. But for those preparing for this IAS examination, it is all about the pride of their country. If you ask them, “What is IAS?” they will answer you with pride and prestige in their hearts. Because for them, it means holding a key position in the Indian government to make their country a better world to live in. Number of IAS Exam Attempts Permitted In the general category for the IAS exam, you can have six attempts. The OBC category has nine attempts. And the SC/St category has unlimited attempts until they attain the age limit for appearing for the exam. IAS Exam Age Limits. The minimum age limit for all the categories is 21 years. But the upper limit for the general category is 32 years. For the OBC category, it is 35 years, and for the SC/ST category, it is 37 years.
