Using the VLT AQUA Drive in a submersible pump application Using the VLT AQUA Drive in a submersible pump application The system consists of a submersible pump controlled by a Danfoss VLT AQUA Drive and a pressure transmitter. The transmitter sends a 4-20mA feedback signal to the VLT AQUA Drive, which maintains constant pressure by controlling pump speed. When designing a drive for a submersible pump application, there are a few important issues to consider. Therefore, the inverter used should be chosen according to the motor current. 1 The motor is a "can motor" with a stainless-steel housing between the rotor and stator. There is a stronger and more magnetic air gap than on a normal motor, resulting in a weaker field, which results in motors being designed with a higher rated current than a standard motor of similarly rated power. 2 The pump contains thrust bearings which may be damaged when operating at a speed below the minimum speed, which normally will be 30 Hz.

However, normally submersible pumps operate with very long motor cables which could eliminate nonlinear motor reactance and allow the drive to perform AMA.

Be aware that if the AMA is successful, the drive will compensate for the voltage drop in the long motor cables. Thus, if the advanced motor data is set manually, the motor cable length should be considered to optimize system performance. 4 It is important that the system operates with minimal wear to the pump and motor. A Danfoss Sine-Wave filter can lower motor insertion stress and increase service life (check actual motor insulation and VLT AQUA Drive du / DT specification). It is recommended to use a filter to reduce the need for maintenance. 5 EMC performance can be difficult to achieve because the special pump cable, capable of withstanding wet conditions in the well, is normally unshielded. One solution could be to use a shielded cable over the well and attach the screen to the good pipe if it is steel (can also be plastic). A sine wave filter will also reduce electromagnetic interference generated by unshielded motor cables. The special “bobbin motor” is used due to the wet installation conditions. The inverter must be designed for the system according to the output current in order to be able to run the motor at rated power. To prevent damage to the pump thrust bearings, it is important to add pressure to the pump. speed as fast as possible.
