  1. General considerations when choosing the power cable Copper or Aluminum? Thousands of types of cables are used around the world. They are found in applications ranging from fiber-optic links for data and telecommunications up to the transmission of underground power THT at 275 kV or more. Certain design principles are common to electric cables, whether they are used in the industrial sector or by the electricity distribution sector. General considerations when choosing the power cable (photo credit: guanlite.com) For many types of cables, the conductors can be copper or aluminum. The initial decision made by a buyer will be based on price, weight, cable diameter, availability, the expertise of available assemblers, cable flexibility and risk of theft. What to choose? Once the decision is made, however, this type of conductor will then generally be retained by that user, unaffected by the regular variations in the relative price resulting from the volatile metals market. For most electrical cables, shape conductor is aluminum solid, stranded aluminum, solid copper (wiring for small sizes) or copper failed, although the choice may be limited in some cable standards. Solid conductors make it easy to fit connectors and adjust cores at joints and terminations. Cables with stranded conductors are easier to install due to their greater flexibility. For some industrial applications, a very flexible conductor is required.

  2. When the cable tray lengths are relatively short, a multi-conductor cable is generally cheaper and more convenient to install than a single-conductor cable. Single-core cables are sometimes used in circuits where high load currents require the use of large conductors. between 500 mm 2 and 1200 mm 2. Under these circumstances, parallel connection of two or more multicore cables necessary to achieve the required classification, which presents installation difficulties, especially at junction boxes. Single-core cable

  3. Single-core cables may also be preferred where conduits are small in size, when longer cable lengths are required between junction bays, or when junction and termination requirements dictate their use. Sometimes it is better to use a 3-conductor cable in the main part of the run and use a single-core cable to enter the tight space of a junction box. In this case, a transition from one type of cable to another is carried out using trifurcate joints positioned several meters from the connection box. Shielded cables Shielded cables are available for applications where installation constraints are severe and where a high degree of external impact protection is required. Steel Wire Armor (SWA) cables are commonly available although Steel Armored Cables (STA) are also available. Generally, SWA is preferred because it allows the cable to be drawn into an installation using a pull stocking that grips the outside of the jacket and transfers all of the pulling tension to the SWA. This cannot normally be done with STA cables due to the risk of the shielding tapes dislocating during pulling. Slip chords for SWA are simpler and they allow full use of its excellent grounding ability. In ATS, the earth fault capacity is very reduced and the retention of this capacity in the glands is more difficult. The protection offered against a range of actual impacts is similar for both types.
