  1. The Quaternary PeriodBy: Trevor Wilhelmi & Nick Vandenberg Humans Appear on Earth

  2. What is the Quaternary Period? • Very meaningful time frame in the geological time scale of our Earth’s history. • The word “Quaternary” means fourth. • The Quaternary Period covers 2.6 million years of the Earth’s history. • At the start of this time period, the continents were just about where they are today. • We are still in the Quaternary Period today!

  3. What was the Earth like? • During the Quaternary Period the Earth went through major climate changes. • The temperature would have some major drops. • Ice ages came and went. • Ice sheets spread from the Poles and cover almost all of North America and Europe, parts of Asia and South America, and all of Antarctica.

  4. “The Age of Man” • One of the main focuses of this time period is the development of the Hominids. • From the first primates in the Tertiary Period to modern man, the Hominid species has evolved amazing abilities. Most of the early Hominid fossils were found in Africa but eventually fossils were found all over the world.

  5. Development of Man • The Hominid brains began to grow and develop and allowed a level of thought and feeling that was, and is, unique among the animals. • We think and solve. We change and control.

  6. Man Wasn’t Alone • Almost all the mammals that on Earth with us today were on Earth with the first humans 2.6 million years ago in a different shape or form, or even the same. • Some of the mammals included the wooly mammoth, mastodon, wooly rhinoceros, reindeer, musk ox, and the American Lion.

  7. In Conclusion • The Quaternary period was and still is a very important time period. • Animals were evolving into what they are today as well as humans. • The many, drastic climate changes helped shape the Earth and its life forms into what it is today.
