  4. “If someone says” - Speaking of the believer who may or may not say this, but if they do, it demonstrates reversionism and cosmic system involvement.

  5. “I love God”, is an assertion of hypocrisy because at the same time they hate their fellow believing brother.

  6. In verse 18 the opposite of love was fear, therefore fear and hate go hand in hand.

  7. Hating your brother is noted in:Rom 13:8-10; 14:10-13; Prov 6:16-19; 2 Tim 3:2-8.

  8. Prov 6:16, “There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, 19a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers.”

  9. “He is a liar”PSEUSTESA liar, one who breaks faith, or a false and faithless man.

  10. “Cannot” OUK DUNAMAINot able to, or to have no power.

  11. The believer in the cosmic system is incapable of personal love toward God, and incapable of impersonal love toward man.

  12. Because he does not have motivational virtue (personal love for God), he is incapable of possessing functional virtue, (impersonal love towards mankind).

  13. This also tells us that our true mental attitude is obvious to all.

  14. Motivational virtue precedes any functional virtue and both are developed exclusively inside GPS.

  15. Vs. 17-18, you cannot have confidence in God without having courage towards man.

  16. Vs. 17-18, you cannot have confidence in God without having courage towards man. Vs. 20-21, you cannot have love towards God without having love towards man.

  17. Any assertion to the contrary is both self-deceit and hypocrisy, Gal 6:3.

  18. This continues John's message from chapters 2:3-6, 9-11 and 3:9-11, 15-18.

  19. John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

  20. Rom 12:9, “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor.”
