  1. ELEMENTS OF ART LINE

  2. WHAT IS LINE IN ART? LINE IS EVERY STROKE YOU USE TO COMPLETE THE WHOLE PICTURE. BASICALLY EVERY PAINTING OR SKETCH IS MADE FROM LINES. WHEN YOU COMBINE LINES TOGETHER, IT PRODUCES SHAPES. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PICTURES BELOW, THE ARTIST USES VERY THIN LINES TO SHOW THE DIFFERENT MOOD OF THE PAINTING. THE SCREAM!!

  3. WHEN DO WE USE LINE? WHAT WILL ART LOOK LIKE WITHOUT USING LINES? WHETHER IT’S A PAINTING, DRAWING OR EVEN A MODEL OF SOME KIND, THERE WILL BE LINES TO FORM SHAPES AND COMMUNICATE THE FEELING OF THE PICTURE. LOOK AT THE PICTURE ON THE RIGHT (THE PEACOCK SKIRT) BY AUBREY BEARDSLEY AND SEE HOW THE ARTIST USED HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL, AND DIAGONNAL LINES.

  4. principles of design: EmphasIs

  5. What is Emphasis? • Emphasis is a technique that an artist uses so that one part of the painting stands out and draws your eye to it. • Usually it is the most important part of the painting. • Emphasis can be in the foreground, middle ground and background in a painting.

  6. How to Create Emphasis When artists use emphasis, they create a focal point in their painting, like this: Ways to Create a Focal Point: • In a painting the focal point is usually quite easy to spot. Larger figures, usually found in the foreground, provide a focal point. • The focal point is usually a contrasting colour than the rest of the painting A focal point is a part of the painting that draws your eye.

  7. Examples of Emphasis: • Michael Schultz • The background in this painting is all pink which makes the white rabbit stand out. • Alicia Poole • This painting is an example of emphasis because the background of the painting is all bright and the middle is black which stands out.

  8. Examples of Emphasis • Unknown • The two different shades of green make the bright red stand out. • This painting is an example of emphasis because your eye is directed to the middle of the painting.
