  2. During the warring states period, China experienced disorder and chaos. Warlords and kings fought to gain control of the land.

  3. Scholars wanted to bring order and peace to China by uniting them under a philosophy. Legalism, Confucianism and Daoism were three ways of thinking that the Chinese developed to bring peace to their civilization.

  4. What does philosophy mean?

  5. Philosophy: Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline.

  6. Legalism: Is harsh punishment needed to make people afraid to do wrong?

  7. Legalism: People who agree with legalism believe that a strong government is needed to unite the people of that particular civilization.

  9. A Legalistic Ruler: Shi Huangdi Shi Huangdi united China through a legalistic form of government. Under legalistic rule, he ended internal battles between the warring states. Disagreed with Confucianism, had Confucius killed and ordered the burning of books that contained ideas that he disliked. Believed in a strong central government.

  15. Filial piety: Respect for ones parents and ancestors.

  16. Famous Confucius Sayings: A superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions. An oppressive government is more to be feared than a tiger. By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

  17. Impact of Confucianism: Sets out clear family and social roles. Following these rules of conduct will allow a society to avoid conflict and live peacefully.

  18. How does Confucius believe a government should be ran? Rulers should be the ultimate example by always showing good morals and conduct. The government should be made of fair and skilled government officials.

  20. Daoism Following the way: Each individual must find an individual moral path to follow. No Rules for conduct. It is up to individuals to find their way to follow life. Ying and Yang

  21. The Yin (Black) stands for all that is cold, dark and mysterious. The Yang (White) represents all that is warm, bright and light. Yin and Yang

  22. Yin and Yang: The Yin and the Yang compliment each other. Understanding the Yin and the Yang allows someone to understand how they fit into the world.
