  3. Nouns A person, place, thing, or idea • man, John, shopper, President, store, Atlantic Ocean, house, movie theater, gift, tree, dog, computer, love, strength, hope

  4. Pronouns Take the place of nouns • Personal Pronouns…… • she, it, they, I, me, mine, him, her, their, you • Demonstrative Pronouns… • this, that, these, those

  5. Verbs Shows action or condition of the person, place, thing, or idea • Action Verbs • jump, leap, throw, run, love, hope • Linking Verbs • am, is, are, was, were, appear, seem, smell, remain, • Helping Verbs • have, has, may, does, would, could

  6. Adjectives Describe nouns and pronouns Answers What kind? Which one? How many/much? • pretty, long, red, big, bright, short, nice, colorful • Articles • A, an, the • Possessive Adj. • his, her, your, their, our

  7. Adverbs Describe verbs, adjectives, and adverbs Answers Where? When? How? To what extent? • slowly, quickly, nicely, very, inside, Test tomorrow

  8. Prepositions Relate a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence • around, in, through, over, beneath, past, since, with, out, by, according to, on account of On Inside Next to Beside Under

  9. Conjunctions Connect words, groups of words, and whole sentences • Coordinating:and, but, or, for, nor, so, yet • Correlative:both…and either…or neither…nor not only…but also whether…or

  10. Interjections Words that express sudden excitement or strong feeling • golly, hey, oh, oops, ouch, well, wow, whew Aha! Oh No!
