  2. Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) • Objectives • The Applicant • Home & Host Institutions • Duration & Financial Support • Registration & Deadlines • Assessment • Approval • How to submit a STSM Application • After the STSM...

  3. STSM - Objectives • to contribute to the Action's scientific objectives • to strengthen the network between Action participants • to carry out complementary activities, exchange experience • by allowing STSM movers • to learn/use techniques (measuring equipment, software, etc.) which are not available in home institution • to consult their work with external experts etc. • STSMs are intended for young researchers • an Action should set up at least 4 STSMs per year

  4. STSM - The Applicant • Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)* - non ESRs possible in exceptional cases • postgraduate student or postdoctoral fellow • employed in an institution actively participating in the Action • MC makes a decision • less than PhD + 8 years

  5. STSM - Home & Host Institutions Home institution Host institution • in COST participating country • formally approved in non-COST country • in COST participating country • formally approved in a Near Neighbour country • in COST participating country • public / private • STSMs between different Actions may be considered by their MCs • the Applicant has to obtain the agreement of the host before submitting her/his application

STSM - Assessment • MC assesses & makes the decisions • MC may delegate (decision to be made in Nancy) these tasks to: • STSM Manager • assessment panel (e.g. MC Chair & Vice Chair, STSM Manager, .........) • assessors should be excluded from the assessment of proposals in which they may have interest

  9. STSM - Approval • MC Chair or STSM Manager circulates the applications -> decision • MC Chair/STSM Manager informs Grant Holder • Grant Holder: • checks application correctness • informs Applicant about the decision • arranges formalities - grant • STSM decisions are reported to the next MC meeting

STSM - How to SubmitApplication • On-line registration • Formal STSM application & annexes • Assessment - MC Chair/STSM Manager • Approval - MC informs Grant Holder • The Grant Letter - Grant Holder sends to the Applicant informing about: • the approval • the level of financial grant given • The Applicant accepts (or not) grant and sends back the Grant Letter to Grant Holder

  12. STSM - The Mission The Mission...

  13. STSM - Scientific Report • Within 4 weeks aftercompletion of the Mission the Grantee submits to the MC Chair / STSMManager a short scientific report containing: • purpose of the STSM • description of the work carried out during the STSM • description of the main results obtained • future collaboration with host institution (if applicable) • foreseen publications/articles resulting or to result from the STSM (if applicable) • confirmation by the host institution of the successful execution of the STSM
