Changing behaviour towards a more sustainable transport demand The objective is to: Analyse the conditions under which the process of growing unsustainable transport demand could be reversed, by changing travellers’, shippers’ and carriers’ behaviours Participation in the original proposal of: 10 countries, 19 Institutes Now: 18 countries, 31 Institutes interested

  3. Introduction • Behavioural changes to reverse the process of unsustainable transport demand: - spatial organisation - use of environmentally friendly modes - use of less polluting vehicles - better use of vehicles • White Paper: “European transport policy for 2010: time to decide”

  4. Objectives How to reverse the process of growing unsustainable transport demand, by changing travellers’, shippers’ and carriers’ behaviours? A long term vision of our problematic: - Comparative analysis of data collection about changing behaviour and temporal issues across Europe - Understanding of the short, medium and long term interactions - Developing elements for a formal theory of policy intervention

  5. Limiting our ambitions Focus on three crucial topics : • Freight transport and energy consumption • Car ownership and car use • National personal transport surveys

  6. Scientific ProgrammeObservation • Longitudinal data issues • RP, SP and SR methods • Shipper and transport operator survey • Methodological issues in statistics • Use of different data sources (from quantitative to qualitative) • Use of new technologies • Dissemination of results through the Web Examples : NPTS, Time use surveys , European Community Household Panel (Eurostat), German Mobility Panel (MOP), British Household Panel Survey (BHPS), ETIS-BASE, ...

Scientific ProgrammeAnalysis issues • Improved models of individual-level behavioural response • Socio-economic factors influencing the dynamic behaviours of mode choice (e.g. size and composition of the household) • Behavioural changes in transport and activity patterns due to location of activities (from urban sprawl to globalisation)

  8. Organisation Three working groups of research: • Freight Transport and Energy Consumption • Car ownership and car use • National personal transport surveys Two levels of network membership are foreseen: • active participants • people interested in the outputs
