  1. The Kennedys and Civil Rights To complete this properly you must begin the slide show

  2. Summarizing the Kennedys’ Civil Rights Record Click the Following link: The Kennedys and Civil Rights Then complete the following: • Create a timeline of events listed on the PBS website • What, specifically, did JFK and his brother Bobby do during the 1960 campaign in relation to the topic of Civil Rights? • How did Robert Kennedy assist the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) shortly after JFK took office? • Who was James Meredith? How was his situation similar to what took place during Eisenhower’s administration in 1957? • What did JFK use in 1963 to get his message on civil rights to the American public?

  3. MLK and the Global Freedom Struggle Click the Following link: The Freedom Rides Then answer the following: • Why did student activists from CORE launch the Freedom Rides? • What were the proposed start and end points of the rides? • How do Morgan v Virginia and Boynton v Virginia relate to one another? • What happened in Rockhill, SC and Anniston, AL? • Why could the KKK attack the riders without fear of arrest? • After the first of the Freedom Rides came to an end, what organization attempted to try again? • Identify three ways the Kennedys “aided” the rides. • Why didn’t MLK Jr. join the riders, and “lead by example”?

  4. Kennedy and Birmingham First, read the Intro to Project “C” in Birmingham • Be sure to note JFK’s quote above the Intro Next read JFK’s press conference comments in “An Ugly Situation in Birmingham, 1963” After reading the selections, respond to the following questions: • How does President Kennedy say this conflict has been resolved? • What is he leaving out of this description of events in Birmingham? • Why would he omit this information? • Judging by these comments, to what extent does President Kennedy appear to support or oppose the Civil Right Movement in Birmingham at this time? Please use evidence from the press conference reading to support your answers.
