  2. Sunday 2/16 Do Now • Read the human perspective on page 415 of your textbook. Explain in 3-4 sentences how having resources can be a negative thing. (Use the example in the reading to help explain your answer)

  3. Sunday 2/16 – African Plateau • Plateau: a broader, flat piece of land higher than the surrounding land. • Most of Africa • Basin: depressions • Many basins in Africa: some 625 miles (1,000 km) across • Some of these basins collect water (Chad)

  4. Sunday 2/16 – Rivers • Nile Rive: Longest river in the world. 95% of Egypt’s population depend on for water. **Population density along river: 3,320 people/sq. mile**Population density in the rest of Egypt: 177 people/sq. mile • Many rivers not useful because of rapids, waterfalls, and gorges.**Congo River has 32 waterfalls.

  5. Sunday 2/16 – Rift Valley • Rift valley: lowland between two highlands. Result of plate movements (pulling apart) • Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania • LakesLake Victoria: 2nd largest freshwater lake in the world.

  7. Sunday 2/16 – Escarpment • Steep slope with flat plateau at top(edge of Africa’s plateau)

Sunday 2/16 • Assignment:Use either the map handed out with you with the Berlin Conference or a resource map in your book. • Read pages 417-418 in your textbook. • Create a list of African Resources • Come up with at least 2 reasons why resources have not benefited many African countries. Explain. Due: Wednesday, February 18

  9. Monday 2/17 Do Now • Describe some of the specific landforms you might come across within Africa. Is Africa rich in resources? Explain.

Monday 2/17 – African Climate • Located between tropics of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer.Suggests what? • Sun shines directly between tropics all year round-warm, tropical temperatures. • Temperature doesn’t change much over seasons, but varies between night and day. “Night is the winter of the tropics”

  11. Monday 2/17 – Sahara Desert • Sahara Desert: Largest Desert in the world3,000 miles across (4,800 km) • Only 20% sand, the rest is small mountains and rock formations. • Aquifers: water located as far as 6,000 ft. below ground • Oasis: water from Aquifers comes to surface

  16. Monday 2/17 Assignment • Complete the compare and contrast worksheet. • You need to compare and contrast the climate in Africa with the climate in Kuwait/Middle East. • Due: If you do not complete the assignment in class, it must be turned in tomorrow (Tuesday 2/18)

  18. Wednesday 2/19 Do Now • Recalling human-environment interaction, what are some ways people interact with their environment? Do you think it is possible for people to turn grassland into a desert?

  19. Wednesday 2/19 Sahel and Desertification • Sahel: shore of the desert (southern strip of Sahara desert)transition into savanna (grasslands) • Desertification: relatively dry area becomes increasinglyarid(lack of water)

  20. Wednesday 2/19 • Pages 424-425 • Look at the desertification process. • Describe the process and its steps. • Which processes of desertification are physical causes and which are caused by humans? • What are some ways desertification could be stopped?

  22. Wednesday 2/19 – Nigeria and Oil • While oil prices were high, Nigerian government spent much money. When oil prices dropped they were left with much debt. • Over the past 40 years there has been over 40 oil spills • Between 1998-2000 approximately 2,000 people were killed in oil explosions

  23. Thursday 2/20 – Film Analysis • As we watch the film, use your knowledge about African landscape to help describe some of the landscapes seen in this film. • You should identify the name of the landscape, where it is featured in the film, and how does it compare with reality.
