  15. The historical background A town and community BRZESZCZE is located in the Oświęcimska Valley in arms of Wisła (Vistula) and Soła rivers. The name of the town derives from vast clusters of a mountain elm, termed in Polish a ,,brzost", which in the past grew the riverside and the plain terrains. Places Brzeszcze, Jawiszowice, Przecieszyn, Skidziń and Wilczkowice date back in their origin to times of medieval colonization and settlement made by Opole and Ratibor Piasts - after the invasion of Mongols - from the half of the 13th century to the half of the 14th century. Wilczkowice was chartered in the year 1272 for the first time, Jawiszowice was recorded in the book of the Peter's-penny collected by pope's collectors in years 1326-27, Brzeszcze named in the list of students matriculated at the Cracow's Academy in the year 1400, Łęki, Skidziń (Skiedzień)and Przecieszyn were mentioned in the year 1457 in the sales act of the Oświęcimskie Duchy made by the Duke Jan (John) the 4th to the favour of the king Casimir the Jagiellon. Since their origination, depending on a location date, these villages had shared fortunes and misfortunes firstly of the castellany and then of the Oświęcimskie Duchy. About 1179, Casimir Sprawiedliwy separated Oświęcim and Bytom castellanies out of the seigniorial district which were given back to Mieszko Plątonogi. The Oświęcimskie Duchy was founded in the year 1315 followed further sub-divisions and bestowals with a new line of rulers originating from the Silesian Piasts. Oświęcim had become the seat and centre of the political and administrative authorities and the judiciary as well. In the year 1327 the Duke John the 1st paid homage from his lands to the Czech's King. In the year 1440, after two-time invasion of Hussites, the Czech language was introduced to the administration and the judiciary. In the year 1445 the further division into three duchies between three brothers took place: Jan (Janusz) ruled in Oświęcim, Wacław in Zator, and Przemysław in Toszek. Just two years later Jan sold his share to the king Casimirthe Jagiellon.

  17. In the year 1822 Brzeszcze became a property of Karol Ludwik Habsburg and stayed as the Habsburgs' property until 1924 when the next squire, Karol Stefan, in frame of tax settlements with the Polish government gave - among others - his estate in Brzeszcze as a present to the Polish Academy of Skills. Generally the foundation amounted to more than 10 thousand hectares of arable ground, forests and ponds and made up the basic estate of the Polish Academy of Skills. The village in the 19th century did not vary from others in Galicia: poverty, dispersed households, overpopulation, excess of labour force. A vast majority of inhabitants went to do seasonal works abroad, others looking for better living conditions emigrated to overseas. In a period of the springtide of nations the unit of volunteers took up an unsuccessful trial to join with the uprising against Austrian army in the Chrzanów locality. The year 1848 brought in lifting of the serfhood and subjection of peasants and bestowing voting rights to them. In the year 1903 the construction of hard coal mine was started in Brzeszcze. It became new source of keeping for local inhabitants and also a basis for founding and development of social and cultural life and patriotic and political activities. Until the outbreak of the World War II 25 societies, teams and social and political organizations acted in here on the basis of network of clubs, common rooms and libraries. In years 1917 and 1918 the population from former Oświęcimskie and Zatorskie Duchies firmly and effectively resisted against propaganda campaigns of the nationalist groups Ostbund and Nordmark requesting to attach these lands - as originally German - to Austria. It is characteristic that these lands and Cracow were just first to liberate from the yoke of captivity after collapse of the Habsburgs Monarchy. In October 1939 Brzeszcze was annexed to the Third Reich and the depressing period of terror had started with displacements and Germanisation and deepened at the vicinity of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. At the area of the district Bor the Nazzi Germans founded two sub-camps: a penal company for men and women and a men's economic camp and at the borderland of Brzeszcze and Jawiszowice a sub-camp for prisoners employed with the local coal mines. Since the started there had been a spontaneous and then the organized Resistance and assistance to the prisoners. Tonnes of food placed in nights in agreed spots, passing on warm underclothes, medicines and dressings, correspondence to and from families, receiving of prison's letters and coded reports on the camp condition, organization of prisoners escapes and hiding them,

  18. liquidation of confidents, clashes with the SS patrols and the military police, sabotages of the mechanical equipment of the mine and the railway transport - there are only a few forms of fighting of the local underground. For the conspiracy and repression actions the Nazzi Germans arrested more than eighty inhabitants the half of them was killed. "In recognition of merits put in the combat with the Nazzi occupier, of the bravery in aid provision to the prisoners of the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz" the town was decorated with the Order of the Grunwald Cross of the third class. On 29 January 1945 the Russian troops entered Brzeszcze. On 7 July 1962 Brzeszcze achieved town's rights. The present administrative shape of the town and the community was established in the year 1982. In the year 1966 the town received - in a way of contents - its crest, with Mr. Jozef Fijas as its designer. In the year 1967 in Brzeszcze at the park near the "Brzeszcze" hard coal mine a monument was erected, from social donations, to commemorate the honour of casualties and murdered during the World War II and in the year 1983 - at the area of the former sub-camp Jawiszowice - the monument in memory of victims of the camp. In the year 1989 the plaque founded by the Brzeszcze inhabitants in 1921 to commemorate "an unknown soldier" was found and unveiled at the park near the "Brzeszcze" hard coal mine. On 27 May 1990 the first democratic ballot to the councils took place. In our country we have faced a change of the political system and the social and economic policy. The changes have also been made in Brzeszcze. In accordance with "The brief monograph of Brzeszcze" by Feliks Chowaniec.. Menu
