  2. What does Eagle Do? • The EAGLE Board would like to thank all of you for your generous donations to the EAGLE Fund. To date you have helped us raise more than$100,000, bringing us halfway to the annual goal needed to give our kids the opportunity to learn, grow, and excel. • The programs made possible EAGLE Fund include: •  Classroom support through aides, reading specialists and math intervention specialist •  Computer access and instruction with Mrs. Cheng •  Art classes, including necessary supplies • new art teacher Mrs. Lianides •  Music instruction with Mr. Gates •  Library support and instruction with Mrs. Thomas •  Rainbow and Second step programs Thank you again for your support and it’s not too late if you would like to contribute: Please drop your check off to the Greenbrook Office

Our 5th Grade Mission Our 5th grade commitment is to provide an educational environment that allows all students equal opportunities to meet and exceed state and district curriculum standards.  Our 5th grade classes are designed to provide an exciting atmosphere that will challenge students at an appropriate pace.  Students will develop critical learning skills, build confidence, increase self-esteem and learn strategies for test taking, by actively engaging in a positive learning process.  It is our passion and responsibility to offer students an inspiring and well-prepared curriculum to learn from.  In doing so, students will experience great academic successes and improved test scores.  We are confident that the commendable achievements that students will earn this year will have an amazing impact in other areas of their lives.

  8. I love numbers! MATH: The math program covers basic facts, as well as emphasizes a conceptual understanding of mathematics. Students will be studying: • Whole Numbers and Decimals • Algebra, Data and Graphing • Multiplication of Whole Numbers and Decimals • Division of Whole Numbers and Decimals • Fractions, Ratios and Percents • Operations with Fractions • Algebra and Geometry • Measurement • Probability • Excel Math (occasionally)

  9. Yes, Reading! READING/LANGUAGE ARTS: Throughout the reading program, students will learn word attack skills to enhance fluency, participate in literature circles, develop vocabulary, and strengthen reading comprehension skills using various reading strategies. The reading will be taught through: • Wonder • Flying Solo • Bridge to Terabithia • Bud, Not Buddy • My Brother Sam is Dead • New York Reading Project/Reader’s Workshop • Student chosen books • Read Naturally

  10. Write On! The fifth grade writing focuses are: • Narrative • Persuasive • Informational/Opinion Writing • Expository • Research Reports • Response to Literature • Writer’s Workshop, Writer’s Express, Houghton Mifflin Reading program, and various other sources will be used to teach the writing focuses, as well as the mechanics of writing. I would prefer that all formal written work or projects be typed in a nice, legible font. We will use googledocs A LOT.

  11. Ooh, ooh, I know! SOCIAL STUDIES: The focus is United States History. Topics that will be covered include: • Geography • States and Capitals • Native Americans • Revolutionary War • The Constitution • Civil War SCIENCE: We create Science Lap Mats in class. Science is taught in class as well as in Science Lab. Mark Pelham is the Science Lab teacher. The topics that are covered in both class and lab are: Matter and Energy Systems of Living Things Weather and Space

  12. Yes, Reading! SPELLING/VOCABULARY: This is a rigorous program which focuses on word meaning, usage, synonyms/antonyms, and context. The Spelling words will be from the Vocab book and tests will be given every two weeks. Week one will be the Spelling Test, week two the Vocabulary Test. OTHER: • Computers, PE, Band, and Chorus are all taught outside of the classroom.
