  1. Civics vocabulary

  2. Civics Vocab • How it’s going to work: • Vocab will be given in a list format broken down by unit. • Each unit will further be broken down by lesson. • You will be responsible for defining the lesson’s vocabulary BEFORE I teach the lesson that the vocab words correspond to. • Ex. Today we are starting lesson 1 of our unit. You will need to define words for lesson 2 before you come to class Friday. • These definitions need to be hand written and put in your vocab section of your binder!

  3. Where do I find definitions? • Write the definition of the word and the page you found it on! • Definitions can be found in the glossary starting on page R41 • Most words will have the definition listed in the glossary, along with a page number on where to find them in the book. Make sure you read the paragraph around where that word appears in the text! • If the word does not appear in the glossary, use the index to find what page it is on. • For words found in the index and not the glossary, read the paragraph around the word, then use a dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com) to find your definition. Make sure you use the correct CIVICS definition of the word. Some of our vocab may have multiple meanings. • If the vocab word is not in the glossary or index, use a dictionary to find the meaning. • If the word is a person or thing, write what is important about that word!

  4. How does vocab count towards my grade? • Every day, you will be assigned a set of vocab words to define. We will review them the next day in class. • Every week, you will have a quiz on the vocab you learned. • Because these assignments are equal parts homework, classwork, and quiz, your grades for these quizzes will be rotating. • Ex. Your first vocab quiz will count as a quiz grade, the second vocab quiz will be a homework grade, and the third vocab quiz will be a classwork grade.

  5. Vocabulary for lesson 1: Due next class • Civics • Government • Direct Democracy • Representative Democracy • Socialism • Communism • Monarchy • Oligarchy • Autocracy: government in which one person possesses unlimited power
