  1. Verbs Express Action or State of Being

  2. Action Verbs • Actions include both physical and mental acts. • Express action in one of two ways. • Transitive – action is directed toward a person, place, or thing. • Passes from the doer (subject) to the receiver of the action (object). • Intransitive – action that is not directed toward a particular person, place, or thing by the doer. • Does NOT pass from the doer (subject) to the receiver of the action (object).

  3. Linking • Express a state of being by connecting the subject to a word or word group that identifies or describes the subject. • Forms of the verb be. Examples- is, are, were, was, am, etc… PLUS other types of verbs found on p. 17. • A linking verb MUST be followed by what is called a subject complement, which is a noun or pronoun that names the subject or an adjective that describes the subject.

  4. Verb Phrases • Verb phrase = one main verb + one or more helping verbs, which help the main verb express action or state of being (p. 391) • NOTE: the word “not” is an adverb, not a verb. It is never considered to be part of a verb phrase. • Example- I could not see the road. • Example- The dog will not listen to anyone but its owner. • Example- The man hadsaid that he didn’t see anyone at the house on the night of the murder.
