  4. Verbs As our hero, Action Verb, told us a verb is an action. • Important things you need to know about verbs: • You can’t have a sentence without one! • They describe an action OR • They describe a state of being (am, be, is, have)

  5. Linking Verbs am, is, are, was, were, be, has been, might have been, like.... I = happy I am happy. The grass = green The grass is green. I am the missing link.

  6. Identifying Verbs Copy the following sentences into you jotters and underline the verbs in the following sentences. It is raining outside. The dog barked as the postman rang the doorbell. I am happy when the sun shines. I have three cats and two chickens. I like cheese on toast.

  7. Verb Vocabulary Carefully choosing the verbs you use is a great way to improve your writing and make it more expressive and descriptive. Your group is going to choose a simple action. Then, your group is going to make a ‘Verb Vocabulary’ poster that shows off all the other verbs you could use instead. Look at the example on the following slide. Can you add any words to it?

  10. Coming up... • Later on in the year we look at verbs again when we look at tense and how verbs and other words change when using the past and present tense.

  11. HOMEWORK Complete the verb quiz! Identify the verbs in the sentences. (There might be more than one!)
