Standard WS 1.2Create multiple-paragraph compositions that establish and support a central idea with a topic sentence at or near the beginning of the first paragraph, includes supporting paragraphs with simple facts, details, and explanations and concludes with a paragraph that summarizes the points. DECIDE MAIN Students will determine a central idea with a topic sentence. Students will determine detail sentences that support the topic sentence. Students will determine a concluding sentence. RECOGNIZE TELL ABOUT FOCUS DECIDE ENDING

  2. Definitions • The topic sentence is the main sentence of a paragraph. It tells what the paragraph is going to be about. • A supporting(or detail) sentenceis a sentence that followsthe topic sentence and supports or gives more detailabout the main idea.   • A concluding sentenceis the last sentence of a paragraph, it summarizes everything that you just wroteaboutand it is somewhat like your topic sentence.

  5. For Example… Camels are called the "ships of the desert". They are used to carry people and loads from one place to another. They can survive many days in the desert without food and water. Their thick fur helps them to stop the sunshine from warming their bodies. They have two toes on each foot, so they move very quickly on sand like a ship on the ocean!

  6. What’s the main idea? Some dogs are seeing eye dogs. Other dogs work at police stations. Sheep dogs watch sheep. ? Some dogs help firemen. While other dogs work at airports. Some dogs work on farms.

  7. Dogs have many jobs. What is a good concluding sentence? 1) Some dogs are big and some are small. 2) Dogs make good pets. 3) Dogs have jobs that help people.

  8. What’s the main idea? We buy eggs and milk. We push the cart down the aisles. Mom lets me put apples in the cart. ? Mom buys what is on her grocery list. The cashier rings up the items. We buy frozen pizza.

  9. Mom and I go grocery shopping. What is a good concluding sentence? 1) Grocery shopping with mom is fun. 2) I like to buy hot dogs and chips. 3) I go to the hardware store with dad.

  10. What’s the main idea? My teacher explains math problems. I write sentences and paragraphs. Students take AR quizzes. ? I turn in my homework. We learn social studies and science. We have recess and lunch.

  11. We do many things at school. What is a good concluding sentence? 1) I like recess and lunch best. 2) At school, students are busy doing many things. 3) We read, write, and do math.

  12. What’s the main idea? Mom puts sunscreen on my face. We collect seashells. ? My brother and I build sandcastles. My dad and I play in the waves. I lay on my beach towel. Mom sits under an umbrella.

  13. A day at the beach with my family is fun. What is a good concluding sentence? 1) My family has fun at the beach. 2) My family has fun building sandcastles. 3) I have fun playing in the waves with dad.

  14. What’s the main idea? I hit a homerun. The bases were loaded. ? I had two balls and a strike. There were 2 outs. This was the last game of the championships. I was the last player up to bat.

  15. My baseball team won first place in the championship game. What is a good concluding sentence? 1) My team won first place. 2) In baseball, we took first place. 3) In baseball, my team won the championship game.

Not only do they help move things from place to place. They also provide people with milk, meat, and hair. Many things are made from camel hair. Camels provide humans with many needs. Camels eat foods found in the desert. They eat plants, grasses and bushes. Camels can get all the water they need from the food they eat. When they cannot find food, they use fat that is stored in their hump to get energy. Eating is not a problem for camel in the desert. Camels’ bodies are made for living in the desert. Their wide feet keep them from sinking into the sand. They have long eyelashes, ear hairs, and closable nostrils that keep out the sand. They have long legs to keep them high above the hot sand. Camels are well-suited for desert living. These “ships of the desert” are adapted to desert living and are helpful to human. They provide transportation, food and hair. They don’t need much water; and they eat desert plants. Camels have body parts that make desert living easy.Camels help humans in many ways.
