  1. ELA and the Brain By: Rhonda Laskowski, Chippewa Valley Schools

  2. What do you know about the brain?

  3. The brain has 2 hemispheres that are connected by neurofibers called the corpus callosum. These neurofibers talk to each other.

  4. This is where the corpus callosum is located in your brain.

  5. The left side of the brain controls muscles on the right side of the body The Brain The right side of the brain controls muscles on the left side of the body

  6. The Main Function of the Left Hemisphere is Language, which includes Reading, Writing, and Spelling However, scientists have found that some students and adults who have difficulty with reading tend to use the right side of their brain instead of their left.

  7. Using the right side of your brain for reading is like trying to paint with your toes rather than your hands.

  8. You are using perfectly normal equipment… but it’s just not suitable for the purpose

  9. While most readers use the interstate highways of their brain… Students who struggle with reading are using back country roads to get to the same place.

  10. This makes you work even harder than most people when it comes to speaking, reading, writing, and spelling.Sometimes you may even feel exhausted after reading or writing because you are overworking your brain.

  11. GOOD NEWS!!!!As you learn new information the brain physically changes.

  12. So, we are going to work on rewiring your brain.Certain kinds of reading instruction can teach these patterns of your brain to change and help you become better at Language.

  13. So, we will be doing many different activities in this class to retrain your brain to work more efficiently. Some activities will include us using and moving our RIGHT HANDS as we make sounds because we are working on retraining and strengthening our brains to use the LEFT hemisphere for language. (Remember when you move with your right side, it’s actually the left side of the brain working.)

  14. So, let’s get ready to retrain your brain!!!!
