  1. Monday 24th May 2010 MOV: The Big Question Success criteria: • I can predict the questions I may have on the Literature GCSE paper. • I understand strategies for tackling them.

  2. The Big Question • In your group, identify 5 potential questions you may be asked for MOV. • How is the relationship between Antonio & Bassanio portrayed? • How important is the theme of greed in the Merchant of Venice and how is it portrayed? • In what respect is the MOV a comedy? • Imagine you are Antonio, what are your thoughts and feelings at the end of the play? • Give advice to an actor playing the part of Portia. • What is the relationship between Nerissa and Portia and how is this relevant? • During and after the court case, describe the thoughts of feelings of the main characters present. • Considering the play as a whole, is Shylock a victim or a villain? • Describe the relationship between Bassanio and Portia and how this is important to the play as whole. • How important is the character of Portia to the play as a whole? • How is the setting, Venice and Belmont, important to the play as a whole? • How are the female characters portrayed within the play? • How significant is the character of Antonio important to the play?

  3. Little Questions • Pick one of your questions and write it in the middle of the blank paper. • Individually, produce 3 questions that you will need to answer in order to tackle the big question. Write each on the mind map. • Now pass it on. • You must now add 3 more questions. These may form a new branch OR a sub-branch of an earlier question.

  4. Feedback: • Number the questions so they are in a logical order. • Present your essay plan to the class! • What strategies have we learnt?

  5. Revision: What are you going to do tonight? • Practice timed extracts • Prepare / review mind-maps • Create essay plans (Big Qs/Little Qs) • Memorise quotes (test each other) • Practice timed poems (SMILE) • Practice TQE/PEE (use your quotes!) • Take time out (max. ½ hour at a time) • Sleep & eat well
