8. Let’s Practice: The steam locomotive beautifully represents new inventions and improved transportation. The artist is obviously ignoring the terrible water and air pollution caused by these new machines. The ship might represent increased trade and wealth created by industrialization. Who built these new machines? Probably underpaid workers laboring in harsh conditions! One might infer the artist believes living conditions have improved and incomes have risen. One might infer this artist represents only the wealthy while overlooking the plight of the poor.
