  1. Quick Write: What is the difference between the left side of the picture and the right side of the picture? How might the inventions on the right side of the picture changed life for the society? If you were naming this piece, what would you title the drawing?

  2. “The Triumph of Steam and Electricity” • This is an English (from Britain) lithograph, “The Triumph of Steam and Electricity,” commemorating the Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary) of Queen Victoria. • It celebrates the accomplishments of the Industrial Revolution in England. • The panels show the improvement of: • the steam boat over the sailboat • The train over the horse and carriage • Theelectricover gas lighting • In this lesson you will learn about the many causes and effects of the Industrial Revolution.

  3. The Industrial Revolution By: Mr. Brady

  4. Our goal for today 1.) To learn, “What was so revolutionary about the Industrial Revolution?” 2.) Why England was the first country to Industrialize? 3.) What changes did industrialization bring to England?

  5. 5 key elements of Industrialization Your goal is to match the correct term to its definition A.) Enclosure B.) Capitalism C.) Mass Production D.) Productivity E.) Urbanization 1.) The process of turning a rural area or village into a town or city. 2.) The high volume, low-cost manufacture of identical items through the use of specialization and interchangeable parts. 3.) An economic system in which all resources are privately owned and markets determine how these resources are distributed 4.) The repossession and fencing-in by landowners of formerly common lands, often for the purpose of commercial farming 5.) The amount of goods and services produced for each unit of productive resources used (output per unit of input)

  6. 1.) Enclosure: the fencing in of lands often for commercial farming. • How can you see the enclosure movement in this picture?

  7. Industrial Revolution: Gallery Walk • 1.) The class will be divided into 2 groups. • Pro-Industrial Revolution newspaper writers • Anti-Industrial Revolution newspaper writers. • 2.) You and your partner will analyze the art in the exhibition. • 3.) You will scrutinize each piece of art from your respective position. • 4.) For each piece of information, describe 3 ways how the piece of art relates to the Industrial Revolution. • You are going to analyze these pictures from your point of view.

  8. Let’s Practice: The steam locomotive beautifully represents new inventions and improved transportation. The artist is obviously ignoring the terrible water and air pollution caused by these new machines. The ship might represent increased trade and wealth created by industrialization. Who built these new machines? Probably underpaid workers laboring in harsh conditions! One might infer the artist believes living conditions have improved and incomes have risen. One might infer this artist represents only the wealthy while overlooking the plight of the poor.

  9. Homework • For homework, please write a 1-2 page newspaper article about the artwork that you viewed today. • Your article should be biased toward your point of view. • have a strong thesis statement (argument) that answers this question: How accurately did the art exhibition represent the era of the Industrial Revolution? • Refer specifically to at least three pieces of art from the exhibition as evidence. • Discuss at least one aspect of the Industrial Revolution for each of the following categories: industrial changes, agricultural changes, social consequences, and political consequences
