  2. Four factors to consider in developing your Travelogue A Tool for Program Marketing Your Audience Needs and Desires Technical Considerations Impact on your Library

  3. A Tool for Program Marketing • In support of your summer reading program, or other literary themes. • As a suggested reading topic for Book Clubs. • To build book displays. • To develop partnerships and outreach projects.

  4. Your Audience • Do Vaudeville vs. “Show and Tell” – Most audiences like a fun performance, interactive, challenging; an experience, not a class. • Provide Information vs. Identification- Connect with more than who, what and where, give them “how” the authors uses the scenery in the story, “why” it works as an allegory or mood-setting scene. • Give them a vicarious experience of some place they’ll never visit, involve them in your story, or the author’s story. • Give them tips on things if they do visit; places to eat, altitude awareness, nearby history and attractions. • Have handouts and takeaways to make the program memorable and shared with others. • Be aware of physical considerations; line of sight issues, leave lights on so they can follow your “itinerary” or take notes easier.

  5. Technical Considerations • Have information and photos high to see above heads. • Text should be large and concise. Audience is not close up! • Pictures should be bright and as large as possible – stretch if need be. • If using people and activities, be ready to explain. Do they match the theme of the story or author you’re promoting? • Be careful of video; unless a pro, stick to slides

  6. Impact on your Library • The Right Author/Theme will generate free media and word of mouth publicity. • Boost in circulation through re-introducing the authors’ collection and read-a-likes. • If using staff this is a terrific cost-effective, team-building activity.
