The “Ingredients” of the Russian Revolution • Had an Oppressive/Conservative Absolute Monarchy • No political rights/freedoms for people • Military losses in Russo-Japanese War and WWI • Mistrust of Czarina Alexandra and influence of Rasputin • Spread of liberal ideas like democracy and communism

  3. Russia Before the Revolution of 1917 • Huge gap between rich and poor • Only 10% actually Russian that lived in Russian territory • Jews treated horribly • All power rested with the czar • Unhappy peasants worked for the rich • Russia undeveloped • Horrible working conditions in factories

  4. Who Was Karl Marx? • German philosopher and social scientist • Father of communism • 1848- wrote pamphlet called “Communist Manifesto” • Explained the theory of a society with no rich or poor • Spent 30 years writing “Das Kapital” • Free-lance journalist

  5. Who Was Vladimir Lenin? • Leader of Russian Revolution and the Bolsheviks • First ruler of new communist Russia

  6. Idea of Communism • Idea was to create a society where there are no rich or poor • Unfair • (Grades Analogy) If students get bad grade, class average can bring it up • If everyone fails, students who earned their grade fail as well
