  2. What is TB PEN? • Mission statement: “The mission of TB PEN is to develop and strengthen the capacity of state and local TB programs to monitor and evaluate their programs and use findings to enhance effectiveness of prevention and control activities.”

  3. What is TB PEN? (continued) • Goal: The goal of TB PEN is to build capacity for TB program evaluation activities in state and local TB programs and increase the number of programs that are evaluating their program activities through the following means: • Engaging TB control professionals to monitor and evaluate TB control activities • Providing expertise and technical assistance for conducting TB program evaluation • Identifying and sharing effective program evaluation strategies

What is the Role of the Evaluation Focal Point? • Program Evaluation (PE) focal point is a requirement of each TB Cooperative Agreement recipient • Focal Point will be responsible for the following: • Serve as the POC in their respective jurisdiction for evaluation activities • Share program evaluation experiences and lessons learned • Build program evaluation capacity • Work closely with TB program staff • Engage in TB PEN activities

Conference Overview—Day 1 1:00-2:15 • Designing the Evaluation • Focus on key steps to evaluation implementation • How to decide when to use process evaluation and when to use outcome evaluation • Designing Surveys • Develop and assess survey questions • Understand the effects of question formatting, wording, coding, and ordering on responses and data quality • Participant sharing

Day 1—continued 2:30-3:45 • 25 Low/No Cost Tools for Evaluation • Examples include tools that are useful and user-friendly • Handouts provided • Qualitative Research: What is It and When to Use It • Learn various methods for collecting qualitative data through surveys, focus groups, and interviews

Day 2 10:00-11:30 • Strategies for Effective Scientific Writing • Focus on methods for communicating findings outside of an evaluation report • Techniques for developing abstracts, manuscripts, and articles • Writing process steps • Data Analysis 201 • Focus on conducting analyses and/or applying the appropriate analyses for obtaining desired results • Understanding what can be done with the data

  12. Day 2—continued 1:00-2:00 • Mock Cohort Review • Brief overview of cohort review in 3 states • Will include 3 “professionally” trained actors/actresses simulating an actual cohort review • Open discussion about cohort review

  13. Day 2—continued 2:15-3:45 • PEN Focal Point Open Forum • Brief update on TB PEN Steering Committee • NTIP Update • Open discussion 4:00-6:00 • PEN roundtables/Consultations • Chance to talk with your PEN consultant and other focal points
