  2. Problem • Is it ethical for doctors and parents to "design" a baby by selecting or altering an embryo they wish to bring to term? • Should it be legal? • If it is legal, should there be limits to the practice?

Background Info • Embryo: Fertilized egg • In-Vitro: Fertilization of an egg outside the mother’s womb (i.e. “test tube baby”) • Stem Cell: “starter” cells that can be grown into any kind of cell • Genome: The entire human DNA sequence • preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PDG): Before an In-Vitro embryo is implanted in a mother, it is screened for genetic diseases (Down’s syndrome, Huntington’s, CF)

  4. Essay Details • In your paper, you MUST have: • Description of what a “designer baby” is • YOUR position on the issue and arguments for your position (minimum of three) • Arguments AGAINST your position (minimum of three)

  5. Essay Details • Essay must be a minimum of 1 and 1/2 pages typed (2 pages if you expect a good grade) • Double-spaced, 1’ margins all around • 12 pt font, TNR or Arial only • Works Cited page • Internet search engines unacceptable • I know when you BS me!!! • Due January 22-23
