  2. What are the basic components of an Essay? Aim: How can we improve our first drafts. • A basic essay consists of what three parts? INTRODUCTION 3 BODY PARAGRAPHS A CONCLUSION

  3. Aim: How can we improve our first drafts. The Introduction A full and complete paragraph consists of a MINIMUM of 6-10 sentences and follows a specific format: THE HOOK (1st Sentence) The HOOK is merely a catchy first sentence that will grab the reader’s attention. REFERENCE THE WORK:Name the title and author of the piece and give a brief description of the plot of the piece. TOPIC SYNOPSIS: Provide a brief synopsis of what your topic is about. THESIS STATEMENT: Where the reader learns the essay’s purpose. What is being proved. A basic thesis statement contains the topic and the 3 main points to support the topic. CONCLUDING SENTENCE (last sentence) Each paragraph should end with a final statement that brings together the ideas brought up in the paragraph and emphasizes the main point one last time.

  4. The Introduction Aim: How can we improve our first drafts. Write an introduction explaining why RALPH is an effective leader. • Introduction:Some people are born leaders. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, young English boys on a deserted island are forced to fend for themselves. One boy in particular named Ralph displays natural leadership qualities. More than any other boy, Ralph proves to be the most effective at helping the boys survive. As a leader, Ralph shows compassion, practicality, and logic, which makes him the best man for the job. • Concluding sentence with transition word: Clearly, Ralph understands that in order to keep order on the island, he must lead by example.

  5. How to Begin Aim: How can we improve our first drafts. • Independently, you will work on rewriting your introductions. • You will rewrite independently (10 – 15 minutes) and then share with a partner who will peer edit (10-15 mins). • Then we will share out and vote 3-2-1.

BODY PARAGRAPHS Aim: How can we improve our first drafts. • In a basic 5 paragraph essay, there are 3 body paragraphs that all follow the same structure; but, discuss and prove different points. • Each body paragraph should discuss one of the points in your thesis. • You are trying to convince the reader that your point is right. • Each body paragraph needs a Topic Sentence + Description + Evidence = Explanation. • Be sure to use transition phrases to connect your ideas. • Write a closing sentence. • Do this 3 times.

Write a paragraph using the following prompt: Explain why RALPH in Lord of the Flies is an effective leader. • Topic sentence: One of Ralph’s first tasks on the island is to get everyone’s names. • The topic sentence is followed by EVIDENCE that leads into greater detail and EXPLANATION of the topic.

  8. THESIS Ralph is an effective leader. Point 1: Ralph’s first task on the island is to get everyone’s names. Evidence “Now go back Piggy, and take names. That’s your job” (Golding 25). Explain: Clearly, Ralph understands that in order to survive on the island they will need to get to know each other. to know each other. Getting names will help them befriend each other. Writing a body paragraph Write a paragraph explain why RALPH is an effective leader. • Body Sentences:One of Ralph’s first tasks on the island is to get everyone’s names. At his first meeting, Ralph tells Piggy: “Now go back Piggy, and take names. That’s your job” (Golding 25).Although the boys go to the same school, they are all in different grades and most do not know each other. • Concluding sentence with transition word: Clearly, Ralph understands that in order to survive on the island they all will need to get to know each other. Getting names will help them befriend each other. • The topic sentence is followed by EVIDENCE (quote) that leads into greater detail and EXPLANATION of the topic.

The Conclusion Aim: How can we improve our first drafts. • The conclusion brings together ALL of the main points of the essay. • It refers back to and RESTATES the THESIS. • The conclusion leaves the reader with a final thought and a sense of closure by resolving any ideas brought up in the essay. #1 RULE IN ANY CONCLUSION YOU CANNOT INTRODUCE ANY NEW EVIDENCE, HOWEVER YOU MAY RESTATE AN IDEA IN A NEW WAY.

  12. DO NOT FORGET THE FORMAL WRITING RULES Aim: How can we improve our first drafts. Do not use the first or second person (I, my, we, us). Do not use the past or future tense. You must write in the present tense. I.e. “LOTF is a book that demonstrates the evil in humans. ” NOT “1984 was a book that demonstrated the evil in humans.” Do not use contractions (can’t, won’t, doesn’t). Do not use clichés, metaphors or figures of speech. Avoid saying “The essay will discuss...” or “In my opinion...” Avoid using “a lot”. If you do use it, take care not to repeat it often. Avoid redundancy and repetition. Be specific. Do not use words such as “things” or “many examples.” Do not be vague.
