  1. Grace episcopal Church Centennial Celebration Boy Scout Troop 486 Thanks You

From the Beginning On May 5th 1955, Grace Episcopal Church became the charter sponsor for Boy Scout Troop 486 and a long standing relationship full of tradition and history has continued for over 55 years. The scouts have been having fun and learning skills in Baxter Hall every Tuesday night @ 7:15 p.m. ever since. In the early days Father Peter J. Brownlee and the Men’s Club President Hal Franks were involved in building the foundations of leadership for the Scout Troop as we know it today.

Leadership From 1955 to 1960 there were a few different men that lead the troop for short periods, but it wasn’t until 1960 when the Church leaders recruited Bob McClusky to be the Scout Master and that’s when the troop really took hold. Mr. McClusky led the Troop from 1960 until 1975 with the help of Alan Butler and many other men. Together they began most of the traditions we continue to this day, and our current Scout Master Mr. Steve Iiams continues to embody the same philosophy that guides our program today. Mr. Iiams and Reverend Susan Scranton have built on the past and are creating the future to enable us to continue to develop future community leaders.

  5. Activities B.S.A. Troop 486 is known throughout the San Gabriel Valley Council as a Backpacking Troop. From the beginning we have believed that boys learn to become men through the guidance and mentoring of other men. We use the outdoors as our classroom to teach the boys confidence, self-esteem, reverence and respect for nature, one another and our community.

  7. Life’s Touched Over the years there have been countless hundreds and possibly thousands of young men that have been touched by their experiences at B.S.A Troop 486 and Grace Episcopal Church. They have logged literally thousands of miles of hiking on trails with names such as Silver Moccasin, The John Muir Trail, and The Pacific Crest Trail. Each of the Scouts has faced challenges, conquered their fears, and achieved their goals in their journey through the Scouting Program.

  9. Achievement The ultimate goal in scouting is attaining the highest rank--to become an Eagle Scout. Nationally only 2% of the Scouts that start the program make it to the rank of Eagle. Since 1955, B.S.A. Troop 486 has had 38 boys earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Our first Eagle Scout was Chuck McKeown, who earned his rank on June 26, 1962. Our most recent Eagle Scouts are Matt Sampson who earned his rank on March 12, 2012 and Kevin Verssen who earned his on April 16, 2012. None of this would have been possible without the foresight and support of the leaders of Grace Episcopal Church.

  11. Service to Others The Boy Scouts of America is a service organization that performs service projects within our community. As part of every Eagle Scout’s journey they must lead the completion of a significant service project within the community. Grace Episcopal Church has recently been the recipient of one of these service projects. Eagle Scout Brandon Iiams’ project was to landscape the entry way of the main sanctuary. He lead a team of scouts in adding a sprinkler system to water the newly planted flowers and shrubs. His project has benefitted the entire congregation with an inviting entrance for all to enjoy.
