Factors I MUST know • Initiatives for the protection of the environment • Organisations for the protection of the environment • Legislation for the protection of the environment
Initiatives • These are things people have been doing or ideas they have taken forward to help protect the environment
Examples • LOCAL : eg waste reduction schemes such as recycling , bottle banks and composting schemes • Write down how this works in Dundee.
NATIONAL: egMillenium Forest for Scotland, introduction of environmentally sensitive areas. These help to promote Biodiversity for the whole country. • Write down how you think that these things would help
INTERNATIONAL: The “Earth Summit” in Rio(Brazil!) and what has happened since then • Read the information sheet and write down 3 key facts about how this has helped
Organisations • These are groups of people who work together. They can be paid or volunteers.
Examples • LOCAL: eg Countryside Ranger Service, Community woodland groups, Red squirrel action group. • Write a couple of sentences about the work carried out by one of these groups.
NATIONAL: eg SEPA • Look back you notes and write down what the letters SEPA stand for and write down the aims of the organisation. List 3 factors which they hope to improve.
INTERNATIONAL: eg World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) • Look back at your notes and write down their aims and what they hope their outcomes to be. • Give 2 examples of organisms who are being monitored by WWF
Legislation • These are the laws which people must obey to help protect the environment
Examples • LOCAL: a law which has been set up to protect a small area in one town is called a byelaw. Byelaws in Dundee have restricted what can be done in way of development in certain areas eg the banks of the Dichty have been designated as a conservation area along its whole length, areas such as Barnhill (next to Broughty Ferry!) have a local nature reserve, people can be fined for litter.
What do you think would be the outcome if someone applied for planning permission to build new houses on the banks of the Dichty or on Barnhill nature reserve? Would you agree with this decision? Give a reason for your answer. • Some local areas are referred to as GREEN CORRIDORS. In what way would these be important in a built up area? (Think about what a corridor is/does in a building)
NATIONAL: these laws affect various parts of the whole country. A good example is the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) • Look back you notes and give one example of a species protected by this act. • Read the sheet to find out about the importance of SSSI’s
What do the letters SSSI stand for? • Give one example of an SSSI which has been set up. • Why are SSSI’s needed? • How do they work to protect the environment?
INTERNATIONAL: these are laws which must be followed by many countries. A good example is the setting up of fishing quotas for members of the European Union. • Why is important have laws governing how much fish you can harvest for a group of countries and not just one?
