Blood Vessels • There are three major types: • Arteries=major transport AWAY from the heart • Arterioles are smaller arteries within the organ • Capillaries=tiny blood vessels • Veins=major transport TO the heart • Both arteries and veins have thick walls, so that nothing leaks out • Capillaries however, have much thinner walls (only a single cell thick), so that nutrients are able to “escape” and nurture every cell in the body

  3. COMPARATIVE ANATOMY: FOUR HEARTS • 1. The Heart of a Fish—two chamber heart; the atrium pushes blood to ventricle and the ventricle pushes blood out to gills • 2. The Heart of a Frog—three chamber heart; the first atrium collects blood from lungs and the second atrium collects from the rest of the body; both pump blood into ventricle and the ventricle pumps out the blood separately • 3. The Heart of Non-Avian Reptiles—four chamber heart; two atria and two ventricles, which is like the human heart, except that there is no complete boundary between the two ventricles

The Heart of Birds and Humans—four chamber heart; the right atrium receives blood from the rest of the body and flows into the right ventricle, which has a weaker pump so that it doesn’t damage the lungs; it sends blood back to lungs. Meanwhile, the left atrium receives O2 rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the left ventricle, which then pumps out the blood to the rest of the body

The Major Arteries and Veins • Pulmonary Artery: CO2 Blood from Heart  Lungs • Pulmonary Vein: O2 Blood from Lungs  Heart • Aorta Artery: The major artery of the heart • Superior Vena Cava: main upper body vein filled with CO2 Blood • Inferior Vena Cava: main lower body vein filled with CO2 Blood • For a complete list of organ specific arteries and veins see Kauffman’s second set of notes, pg. 3 (Note: tell students about the red vs. blue color choice)

Regulating the Circulatory System • Health Alert: High Blood Pressure • Blood Pressure = Blood Flow X Resistance to Flow ^Controlled by blood volume and cardic output ^ Controlled by blood viscocity and vasoconstriction (how squeezed veins are) • Adrenaline Glands: epinephrine and norepinephrine---B-blockers are drugs that prevent these glands from acting • When you increase stroke volume and heart rate, you get increased blood flow • Increased Venous Return= increased stroke volume
