  1. 4.2: Function Notation

  2. Announcements • Test corrections: -3 points if submitted by tomorrow. • Linear programming projects due next week! • Read the instructions!

  3. Vocab • Relation: any relationship between two variables. • Set of ordered pair. Ex: (1, 2) • Function: for every “x” value there is only one “y” value. • The “x” never repeats! • Domain: x-coordinates • Range: y-coordinates

  4. To be or not to be (a function?)

  5. Vertical Line Test • Use it to determine if the graph is a function or not.

  6. Are these functions? • (Philip, 14), (Kara, 15), (Mia, 14), (Harry, 16) x = y = • (-2, 3), (0, -9), (2, 5)

  7. Are these functions? cont. • (4, 8), (5, 9), (4, 9) • (3, 0), (5, 0), (-8, 0)

  8. Function Notation • f(x) = “f of x” • f(x) = y • x is the input • y is the output

  9. Example • Given f(x) = 3x + 2, find f(-2), f(0), and f(4). • Given h(t) = 2t2 – 4. Find h(3).
