Turkish people who have made a difference. Sabiha Gökçen (1913 – 2001). Sabiha Gökçen (pronounced goke -cha) was a Turkish aviator. In 1936 she became the world's first female fighter pilot. When she was 23 years old she became Turkey’s first female combat pilot.

SabihaGökçen(1913 – 2001) • SabihaGökçen (pronounced goke-cha) was a Turkish aviator. • In 1936 she became the world's first female fighter pilot. • When she was 23 years old she became Turkey’s first female combat pilot. • One of the photos on the left shows her holding a bomb before a bombardment operation.

  3. NaimSüleymanoğlu (1967-) • NaimSüleymanoğlu is a Turkish World and Olympic Champion in weightlifting. • He won three Olympic Championships, seven World Championships and six European Championships and earned 46 world records. • Süleymanoğlu is pronounedSoo-lay-man-oluin English.

YaseminDalkilic(1979-) • YaseminDalkilicis a Turkish female free diver. • Free diving is underwater diving without using breathing apparatus. • Free divers have to hold their breath until they resurface. • YaseminDalkilic holds numerous world records in different categories of free diving. • She is still in the middle of her career but is already considered to be one of the all-time greats in the sport. • Dalkilicis pronounced val-ki-lichIn English.

MimarSinan(1489 – 1588) • Sinanwas the chief architect and civil engineer for sultans Suleiman the Magnificent, Selim II and Murad III. • Some of the incredible structures he designed are still standing including: • The Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul • The Büyükçekmece Bridge • The ‘Old Bridge’ • The Sehzade Mosque (photo of inside shown).

  6. St. Nicholas The real Santa Claus! • The real Santa lived a long time ago in a place called Asia Minor, now the country of Turkey. His name was Nicholas. • Nicholas' parents died when he was a teenager. His parents left him a lot of money. He went to live with his uncle who was a priest. • Nicholas used all his money to help other people and was such a good man that he was made a Bishop. • Bishops look after people and that is what Nicholas did. He helped people in trouble. • Everyone loved Nicholas. He is an example of how we should live. And that is why he became a saint. • It is thought that St. Nicholas is Santa Claus. • St. Nicholas/Santa/Father Christmas is a friend of children.
