  2. Learning Goal: I will be able to identify matter as Solids, Liquids and Gases.

  3. What is matter? Anything and Everything!!! Matter is anything that takes up space. Pencils, desks, water and air are all matter!

  4. How do we identify matter? We identify matter by its properties. How it looks, smells, tastes, feels.Its size shape and color.

  5. Have a definite shape • Have a definite volume (takes up space) • Molecules are packed tightly together • Molecules move slowly SOLIDS

  6. Examples of SOLIDS

  7. Take the shape of the container • Have a definite volume (takes up space) • Molecules move faster than solids • Molecules are not as close to each other Liquids

  9. Takes the shape of the container • Have no definite volume • Molecules move very fast • Molecules are spread out Gases

  11. Plasma • Small electrically charged particles. Examples: Stars Lighting Fire

  12. Energy can change states of matter. • Heat is energy. Heating a solid will eventually turn it into a liquid. Heating a liquid will eventually turn it into a gas. Taking heat away from a gas will eventually turn it into a liquid. Taking heat away from a liquid will eventually turn it into a solid. How do states of matter change?
