  2. States of Matter Brain Pop! • http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/statesofmatter/ What are the four states of matter? • How are they all different? • What is plasma and where do we find it? • Which state of matter is the freest?

  3. Solids, Liquids, and Gases Card Game! • You will play with the 2 other classmates at table • 1. There are 3 picture cards (liquid, gas, solid) • 2. Each player will randomly select ONE picture • 3. Shuffle the other cards and spread them face up on the table • 4. Take turns picking a card. • 5. If the card describes your picture, keep it • 6. If the card does NOT describe your picture, place it back on the table face up • 7. The game ends when each player has their set of cards

Card Game Discussion • The particles have almost no movement energy • Solid • The particles are in a fixed position • Solid • The particles have a weak pattern • Liquid (particles can flow freely around each other but are still packed closely together) • It is usually invisible & we can’t feel it • Gas • The particles are spread far apart • Gas

  5. 1. Solid • When things are colder, they are usually a solid • It can hold its own shape • High density-molecules are tightly packed • Energy level: low • Example: ice • What are other examples? • What happens if we put a solid in a container?

  6. 2. Liquid • Heated solid becomes a liquid • Heated liquid becomes a gas • Example: water • Molecules are less densely packed • They can move around a little more and slide past each other! • Energy level: higher than solid • What happens if we place a liquid in a container?

  7. 3. Gas • When things are hotter, they heat up to a gas • Example: vapor or steam • What are other examples? • The atoms are VERY spread out and collide with each other • More energy! (Highest energy of them all!) • What happens if we fill a container with a gas?

  8. 4. Plasma • Similar to gas • It has an electrical charge • The atoms are very excited! • Plasma gives off light • It can conduct electricity • Examples: fluorescent lights, neon signs, and lightning • Sun is in a plasma state
