  1. Something Other Than Word Processing: Making Use of Different Technologies for Assignments Michelle Toth, SUNY Plattsburgh Why Use Different Technologies? Introducing students to a variety of technology gives them life skills to and confidence to continue to learn new technologies. The best gift we can give our students is learning how to learn. The more experience students have with a variety of technologies the more adaptable they will be with future technologies. While we may have our students focus on academic use of these technologies the experience will help develop skills valuable to future employers. Introducing new technologies also contributes to the SUNY Information Management component of the General Education program. • Technology Options • The Web2.0 boom is providing great new products all the time to try out and make use of. • A Sampling to Consider: • BlogsBlogger/BlogSpot - https://www.blogger.com/start WordPress - http://wordpress.com/ • WikisWikiDot - http://www.wikidot.com/WikiSpaces - http://www.wikispaces.com/ • Tagging/Social Bookmarking Delicious - http://delicious.com/Diingo - http://www.diigo.com/ •  Surveys/PollingSurveyMonkey - http://www.surveymonkey.com/PollDaddy - http://polldaddy.com/ • Audio/Video RecordingsAudacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/Windows Movie Maker The Assignment When using a new technology for the first time in an assignment be sure to run through the process yourself first – and even better, get a colleague to try it out as well. Make sure all your students have access to the technology whether directly from the web or on campus computers. Part of the appeal of using new technology it to try out its many features. While you want to be sure students meet the requirement for the assignment, allow some flexibility for students to explore the features and use personal choices and settings. This can increase student interest in the assignment and reinforces self directed learning. • Rubrics • If you followed the path above you have already identified the categories for your rubric. Select the weight for each item and outline your grading criteria. • Rubrics can be a real time savers for faculty and can help clarify expectations for students. • Possible Technology Criteria: • Used the technology to communicate effectively • Used appropriate technology features to present and format information • Appropriate use of design elements (colors, images fonts, etc…) • The technology assignment was successfully saved and submitted in the appropriate format. • Learning Objectives • A typical paper can encompass several different types of objectives: • Writing (grammar, persuasiveness, style, etc…) • Research (searching, evaluating, citing, etc..) • Knowledge Acquisition (summarizing, explaining, etc.. ) • Critical Thinking (logical processes, comparing etc…) • Selecting a primary objective along with only a few supporting objectives can help make the intent and focus of the assignment clearer for your students.
